JSON Formatter
Format, minify and validate JSON in the browser. When something is wrong you get the exact line and column plus a friendly explanation.
What is it
JSON stores data as text in a format every language understands. Raw JSON is often one long compressed line that humans can’t read. Formatting pretty-prints it with indentation so you can see the structure, minifying squeezes it back to the smallest size, and validation checks whether the text is even valid JSON at all.
Notes & fun facts
JSON began life as a throwaway subset of JavaScript object syntax. The joke used to be that it took over the web not because it was great, but because it was smaller than XML — Gmail and Ajax demos in the early 2000s made it the default data snack of the internet.
Origin & history
JSON was specified by Douglas Crockford in the early 2000s; he handed it to the world around 2001 as a message format and registered it as the official MIME type application/json. It became an Internet Standard with RFC 4627 in 2006 and later RFC 8259 (2013).
